FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ashland, Or. September 10, 2011 flyer | Detective Kubu Website | ashland mystery The Inspector Kubu Series: the not-so-nice side of Botswana Death
of the Mantis finds Detective Kubu (Rra David Bengu) in the middle of
misadventure in the sun-baked riverbeds of the Kalahari Desert. It's Michael
Stanley's third mystery set in Botswana, where the light of democracy and
progress battles the darkness of corruption and superstition.Meet Detective Kubu in the persons of Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip who write as Michael Stanley on Friday October 7, 2011 event at Bookwagon New and Used Books, 1652 Ashland Street in Ashland. Michael Niemann, international economist, will introduce the Friday October 7 event and as a background to Sears and Trollip's visit, will talk about Botswana politics, trade and culture on Sunday October 2 at 2p at the Ashland Public Library. Don't miss Botswana: Diamonds are a State's Best Friend. Red tea and yam biscuits will be served.
Who is
Detective Kubu and why has he found such a home in our mystery-loving minds?
He's big, seemingly passive and slow moving - friends call him Setswana, The
Hippopotamus. Just like the hippopotamus, Kubu is dangerous and unexpectedly
aggressive when he's on the move, on the trail of injustice, determined to right
wrongs. A Carrion Death was the first Detective Kubu mystery (HarperCollins, 2008), a blockbuster for everyone who reads it. Then came The Second Death of Goodluck Tinubu (Harper, 2009). Detective Kubu's reputation spreads from Gaborone and his character deepens. Zimbabwean teacher Goodluck Tinubu is the second man bludgeoned to death at the Jackleberry bush camp in northern Botswana.
Move over Mma Ramotswe: there’s a
new player in town, none other than Gaborone’s Assistant Supt David “Kubu”
Bengu, of the Botswana Criminal Investigation department, and he is without
doubt the most engaging literary detective in Africa. … To make use of a
horribly abused and overused cliché, the story is as fresh as tomorrow’s
headlines and as refreshing as a cold beer, at sunset, in the hot African
bush.
